Seniors Steppin’ Out is an innovative, individualized program which enables seniors with intellectual and developmental disabilities to transition from the workplace and work-related activities to retirement and senior living activities. Individuals at least 55 years old participate in various community-based activities each weekday with the support of a senior activity coach. These activities occur throughout the community, but are most frequently in partnership with established sites such as Holiday Park, Margaret Schweinhaut, City of Rockville and City of Gaithersburg senior centers. Inclusion with seniors without developmental disabilities is the key to these partnerships.

The Arc of Montgomery County focuses on maximizing the community resources and supports necessary to provide a normalizing, integrated environment. Seniors Steppin’ Out enables seniors with intellectual and developmental disabilities to experience life as most other seniors know it. It facilitates connections with seniors without disabilities and allows them the opportunity to make new friendships.

Seniors Steppin’ Out participants also take classes through the Montgomery County Department of Recreation and enjoy daytrips to various special events. Door-to-door transportation allows senior participants of all ages and abilities to participate fully in these activities. The activities offered through Seniors Steppin’ Out are designed to appeal to each individual’s personal likes and dislikes, and are accessible for individuals living on fixed incomes.

Hours: Monday-Friday, 9:30 am-3:30 pm.
